Influenced by the Nayarit indigenous and folkloric Mexican art, Sayulita is a special place. It's a curious, one-of-a-kind mixture of the old world and the new. Even though the place has grown fast, it has maintained a small-town vibe and a deep connection to its' Mexican soul. Sustainability is (and always has been) a central theme in its' products. Also playing into this, Mexico has strict importation laws, including a high import tax designed to encourage local production. Although we can still spot a few cheesy imported goods, Sayulita will always keep its handmade magic. With a bunch of cool local stores & products to choose from, the question is; who do you want to support?
First, make your way to the Hippie Market. This is by far the hub of Sayulita and the people you should consider supporting. The market runs all around the local baseball field, and you will find gorgeous handcrafts made by Indigenous from Oaxaca. They carry pompoms, dream catchers, purses, kid's stuffed animals, jewelry, and the list goes on. Make sure to check them out.
Top & wide leg pants are from Ula, clutch is from the hippie market and the sandals are from Toms.
Moving on to local stores & brands, here are my faves:
2. Ula Boutique Ula Is a small store on the corner of Calle Navarrete & Marlin. Run by Paola, a local Mexican Artist. Her collection is designed and manufactured locally and is inspired by authentic Mexican beauty. They carry apparel, beachwear, and accessories.
3. Zafirro Jewelry has been in Sayulita for almost 2 decades. This little tiendita holds a few accessory lines, including a gorgeous handmade Jewelry collection. You can also find magic crystals, sage and vag eggs in case you're into Kegel crunches.
4.Markora Traiding Carries a line of sustainable home goods from naturally dyed rugs to table setting ceramics and a beautiful apparel collection.
5. Ref Apparel is a new clothing brand in Sayulita; they work with natural fibers and beautiful up-cycle linens. They have a small in-store atelier, and each piece is made to order.
6. Project Arkefacto The owners of this small boutique travel back and forth to the south of Mexico and collect the most beautiful Mexican and indigenous art. It really feels like you are walking into a museum, every piece has its story <3.
